There are two kinds of people in the animation industry today. First, those who run the Animation business and make money out of it. Second, those who work on the projects and make a living out of it. There is a fast emerging third kind as well, but it is still in the making and we can discuss it towards the end.

As far as we can trace back the history of animation being done as a business, we can notice that the people who started running studios were animators themselves. It was their love for the trade that inspired them to turn it into their profession and later on into their business. Walt Disney is perhaps the most appropriate example of an animator turned entrepreneur. He has written a success story like no other, which is still going strong and continues to inspire budding animators. And for quite a while after that, animation remained a relatively low key affair, taking place in small but creatively rich studios mainly in the US and Europe. But as the features churning out of these creative melting pots started to make their presence felt on the big screen more and more often, the scenario started changing rapidly.

Smelling the big bucks and even bigger revenue generation streams, the whole showbiz and entertainment industry started opening its doors for animation. Today, Animation and its first cousin, Gaming, together form an industry bigger in size than any other in the entertainment sector. This trend is marked with the exit of the small animator turned entrepreneur from the centre stage. Bigger (not necessarily better) players with deeper pockets have changed the business model of the way animation is done. So now we have the Management, who knows nothing about animating but knows something about running the business (they think it is the same as running the ‘show').And we have the Animation professionals who work (read salary) for the management on the projects that the management thinks they should work on (because of the profitability) and go home at the end of the day. This is the commercialization of Animation. Something like what happened to the hand made cloth with the coming of industrialization and mass production in the 18th century. One can counter saying this is inevitable and is an essential byproduct of the growth of the mankind, which is true up to a certain extent. But then there are animators like me on the face of this earth that want to see things change in the future.

The emergence of the third kind holds the key to the future of animation. The idea of resurrecting Disney in the modern animation business thrills me. Some of the small entrepreneurs in animation have survived the onslaught of commercialization but have largely remained as specialized players catering to a very small section of the clients.

Their work gets refrained to some local audience or a few shows here and their. The time has come for the third kind. For the entrepreneurial animator to take on the bigger players, head on. I dream of a future where platforms such as the internet will enable the guy sitting as an employee in that biiigggg animation studio will finally hear that inner voice and start doing something about it. A future where the talent of a young animator will screened right next to Pixar's and 20th century fox's biggest releases, right there in the big league. How will this happen? Most people don't know that you can use Photoshop to do web design. They just think of it as a graphics editor and that it is for working on images that would display inside a web site. The fact is though, you can create the whole website with Photoshop.

First, you have to split the site up into three main components. The header, the content, and the footer. The reason you do this will become evident eventually.

You then think about the size you want for the site. A good rule of thumb is around 600-700 pixels wide. The length of the site (vertically) will change depending on your content, which is why you create the header, content area, and footer separately.

Using the enormous amount of tools available in Photoshop, you create the actual graphics of how you want the site to look. Add images to the header, create dazzling text, all of that.

Make sure you leave a nice empty section in the content area. The initial Photoshop file will be around 400-500 pixels high, to allow space for a header and footer, and an area in the middle for content.

You then use the Slice Tool (located in the flyout for the crop tool) to draw slices on the finished Photoshop composition. This lets you specify how the images should be sliced and lets you pick the area for content.

If you cut it right, the content area will grow as your content grows, meaning the template you're making will work for any amount of content.

Then you will save the file in the native PSD format, so that you can edit it later, and then save it again using the option Save for Web and Devices...

This will bring up a dialog that allows you to make selections based on quality and image type. You want JPEG and at least 80 on the quality.

Pick your location for the files and Photoshop will cut your graphic into pieces, based on your slices, and assemble those pieces with an HTML file.

All that is left is to open the HTML file in an HTML editor and add your content in the appropriate section. You will then have a beautiful, eye popping web design, done almost entirely in Photoshop.

Here's a tip: When you open the HTML page, make sure to center the layout and change the background color to match that of your new website.

Graphics are an important part of web design but require serious thought and planning.

Many websites I see suffer from the same problem. The graphics make the page look unattractive and cause the site to be ineffective because the all important message is difficult to focus on.

This article is aimed squarely at those adventurous souls that are about to design and produce their own website for the first time.

Before you start to design you site, ask yourself “What graphics do I really need”. Filling every spare inch of space with animations or flashing buttons is definitely not a good idea; your pages should look nice and clean.

When it comes to web design less is definitely more. Too many unnecessary graphics may slow down your load speeds. They will cause your page to be cluttered and confusing making it difficult to focus on your message. Isn’t your message the only reason you have a web site?

Now might be a good time to spend a few moments discussing how you get to see a web site when you visit one.

After you type the URL you are taken to the site you intended to visit. The first thing that will happen is that your computer will cache the page you have arrived at. It will cache every file on the page including the graphics files. The more files it has to cache and the larger they are the longer it will take to view the page. There are few things that can do a better job of turning an internet visitor off than slow loading pages. People may be patient in life but there is no such thing as a patient web surfer. Make them wait and they will vote with their feet. Always remember that not every one has a high speed internet connection so design for slower surfers.

There are a few basic things that you can do to help speed your page load times and also make your site more attractive and user friendly.

Think of a theme. If you intend to use a tiled graphic as a background with a blue side border and your logo, use it throughout your site. It will help make your visitors more comfortable as whichever page they visit will be visually similar enough that they will always know that they are still in your site. It’s surprisingly easy to click a button and end up in a strange site without realizing it. By using the same graphics over as much as possible it will speed your load times because once a graphic has been cached, it can be reused as needed without caching it again.

Optimize your photographs. When you take a photo with your digital camera the chances are that your picture file is between 100Kb and over 1Mb. There is usually no advantage to using even a 100Kb graphic on your page. If you want to show a large photo, place a small picture on your page with a link to the larger one that way your visitor will be able to choose whether they are interested enough to wait for a larger file to load. I usually try to reduce my graphic file sizes to about 10Kb maximum; it’s not as hard as it sounds. Just cropping your photo can have a drastic effect on your file size.

Remember:
• empty space is not always bad
• small files are fast files
• if you don’t need it, don’t use it

If an animator is to truly get good at their trade they need to have a bit of knowledge behind them and understand the theories and techniques that are necessary to produce the 3-D, 4D, and 5D graphics special effects that all this modern technology is capable of. Today, in the United States we are outsourcing much of our animation creation to India, so those in the United States that hope to compete must be the best of the best.

Not only must they know the nuts and bolts of the industry, and a good bit about 3-D modeling but they must also understand the texture mapping, lighting, and the drawing and rendering. And even then getting the job is not going to be that easy. Additionally, it should be noted that 3-D animation has its own vocabulary, its own language, and if you can't speak it, you can expect to get in.

If you are truly interested in getting a high-paying job in graphic animation, then you need to read up on this subject so that you understand all the ins and outs of the industry. In case you are interested enough to go through the learning curve, I'd like to recommend a least one of the books that you should read. The book is called;

This book is in fact, a good reference book and if you are a graphic designer, or animator of any type this should be your library; it's in mine.
